How our community works
Family Handbook
The handbook is where our expectations are written down — how the school year runs, what students and families can expect from us, and what we ask of them in return. This page is an overview of what it contains.
This is a summary. Enrolled families receive the complete Family Handbook, which includes the detailed policies and procedures that govern day-to-day school life. Where this overview and the full handbook differ, the full handbook governs.
What we expect of one another
Discovery Preparatory Academy is built on four commitments — Excellence, Integrity, Leadership, and Growth. We ask students to do honest work, treat others with respect, and take ownership of their learning; and we hold ourselves accountable for teaching well, communicating clearly, and supporting every student who enrolls.
What the handbook covers
The full handbook is organized around the areas below. Each section sets out the specific expectations, procedures, and family responsibilities for that part of school life.
Enrollment & attendance
How enrollment works, what a student's schedule looks like across a self-paced week, and the attendance and participation expectations for each pathway — including live sessions and required checkpoints.
The academic program & grading
How courses are structured, how progress and grades are reported across the four grading periods, promotion and credit, and how transcripts and records are maintained.
Technology & acceptable use
What families need to take part online, how the learning portal is used, and the responsible-use expectations that keep the online classroom safe and focused for every student.
Student conduct & academic integrity
The standards of behavior we expect online and in any in-person setting, our commitment to honest work, and the fair, supportive process we follow when concerns arise.
Communication & support
How families reach teachers and the administration, how we keep parents and guardians informed, and the support available to students who need extra help. Guardians can follow their own child's progress in the family portal.
Health, safety & well-being
How we protect student privacy and safety, our commitment to a respectful community free from discrimination and harassment (see our Non-Discrimination Policy), and the resources available to support student well-being.
The family partnership
What families can expect from the school and the role parents and guardians play — because at an academy where much learning happens at home, that partnership is central to a student's success.
