Your family's privacy

Privacy Policy

Discovery Preparatory Academy serves students from Pre-K through Grade 12, which means we collect information about children — some of them very young. We take that seriously. This policy explains what we collect, why, how we protect it, and the rights families have.

Last updated: 11 July 2026.

Who this policy covers

This policy applies to the Discovery Preparatory Academy website and family portal, and to the students, parents, and guardians who use them.

Information we collect

  • Account details — the name, email address, and (for students) grade level used to create a portal account.
  • Learning records — the classes a student is assigned, lessons they complete, and scores on lesson check questions.
  • Content families provide — notes and tasks a student writes in their portal, enrolment enquiries, and messages sent to the school.
  • Limited technical data — anonymous, aggregated analytics collected as you browse: page views, the referring website, general device and browser type, page-performance metrics, and anonymous error reports. Visitors are counted with a rotating, one-way hashed identifier — never a tracking cookie — so these statistics do not identify individual children.

We collect only what we need to run the school's learning programme. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Children under 13 — parental consent (COPPA)

Because we serve young children, we follow the principle of the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA): a child under 13 should not create an account on their own. When you register, you confirm that you are the student's parent or legal guardian (or that you are the student and are at least 13), and that you consent to the collection described here. A parent may, at any time, review their child's information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete the account and its records.

How we use information

  • To provide the learning portal — show a student their assigned classes and lessons, record their progress, and let teachers support them.
  • To let a linked parent or guardian follow their own child's school-facing progress.
  • To communicate with families about enrolment, classes, and school announcements.

How information is shared

Access is limited to the student, the school's staff, and a parent/guardian who holds an approved link to that child. A guardian sees only school-facing information (classes, progress, assigned work, the school calendar) — never a child's private notes. We use a small number of service providers (for example, to send email) and share only what those services need to function. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety of a student.

How we protect information

Connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Staff and family accounts are protected by hashed passwords and optional two-step sign-in. Student and family records are stored on a secured server outside the public web area, backups are encrypted, and access is restricted by role so staff see only what their job requires.

Data retention

We keep a student's learning records for as long as the account is active and as needed to run the school. Anonymous usage statistics are automatically pruned. A parent may request deletion of their child's account and records at any time (subject to any records the school is legally required to keep).

Your rights as a parent or guardian

You may ask us to show you what we hold about your child, correct anything inaccurate, or delete the account. To make a request, contact the school using the details below and we will respond promptly.

Cookies

The portal uses a single sign-in cookie to keep you logged in securely. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and revise the date above.
